Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico (Sperm Whales, Humpback Whales, Dolphins). The book will be published in spring 2018.

The Dominican Republic is one of the most thrilling spots for whale watching. Especially sperm whales, also humpback whales as well as many kinds of dolphins. The tours start in the Northeast of the island, especially in Samaná, Puerto Plata, but also in Santo Domingo.

Snorkeling with Humpbacks, mother and child

If you trust yourself, you can go snorkeling with these gentle giants. For example at the Silver Banks. Especially the young humpbacks are very curious and want to see, what kind of strange animal is paddeling around. They either come to you close-up or they swim away. We always let them decide whether to have contact or not. In any case, it´s an overwhelming experience.

Sperm Whales, Physeter Macrocephalus, are among the most extraordinary animals on this planet. They´ve got the largest brain of all mammals, six times bigger than the human brain.

A family of sperm whales at the Silver Bank, Dom. Rep.

About half of it´s life the sperm whale spends under water – usually between three hundred and twelve hundred meters – chasing giant squids. The pressure down there is not only unimaginable, but it is as well absolutely dark. How do the whales orientate themselves? How do they find their prey? What makes them bear the immense pressure? The simple answer is: We don´t know.

Through whaling of the past centuries we at least know that the bulky snout of the sperm whale contents an oil, which for the whalers looked like sperm – that´s where the name comes from. That oil was among the most valuable parts of the animal and was used for lamps. Therefore they were mercilessly hunted.

There are many fascinating and almost unbelievable stories about sperm whales, which – among other information – you can read in the book of Georg Wuebbolt:
